Then comes prototyping a solution. That might mean physically prototyping it; building it in miniature, or a one-off to see if it will work. Or, it might mean prototyping a new customer experience? a collection of moments that make up an experience. In either case, designers play a critical role.

STEP BACKGROUND In a special exhibition at the 2003 Paris InternationalFurniture Fair, leading graphic designers were paired withleading furniture designers. Each graphic designer was tointerpret the assigned furniture as a visual experience. STEP OUTCOME I defined an ambitious approach of hanging the chairs inspace with four surrounding projectors to display visualmappings intersected with the shadows of the chair. I didcomputer graphic simulations to test the hypothesis. Two fall back positions were defined—one was a simplificationof the projector concept employing three projectorsin an unenclosed space and the other was a simple flatgraphic to print out and display. Negotiations of method were done via e-mail and all communicationof plans was presented through the web.
