Next, comes defining the approach by which victory will be achieved. Once you know where you want to go, you need to create a map to get there. That map must be imprinted in the minds of every participants along the way. Designers can literally make the map real.

STEP BACKGROUND
In a special exhibition at the 2003 Paris InternationalFurniture Fair, leading graphic designers were paired withleading furniture designers. Each graphic designer was tointerpret the assigned furniture as a visual experience.

Two Sawaya Chairs in Synthetic Suspension
“I am a great fan of William Sawaya’s use of bold yet simplelines that realize little spaces that silently call out to us tooccupy them somehow. Whether it be a table or chair, thesespaces he creates have an energy that seems to magneticallyattract us to them. For this installation, I digitally mappedthe tension between two of his chairs within the identicalseries; each point in the model calls out to the correspondingpoint of the other chair. They fight to somehow connectto each other in static space. I think that this is a representationof the mind of William Sawaya—as he deceivingly, coolly drinks his espresso, his mind is in utter chaos offorces that search for a peaceful space for the human body.”

STEP OUTCOME
When I reviewed the digital modeling data for WilliamSawaya’s Maxima Chair Series, I realized that there was avisual opportunity in mapping the difference between twoof the chairs (the lounge and stool) as motion.
