Then comes prototyping a solution. That might mean physically prototyping it; building it in miniature, or a one-off to see if it will work. Or, it might mean prototyping a new customer experience? a collection of moments that make up an experience. In either case, designers play a critical role.

STEP BACKGROUND
KINETIK conceived of a time capsule-like package promoting a day in the life of a typical Georgetown Law student. We proposed that the running student commentary would form the heart of the materials and would speak to key academic and social issues, while a special section on local neighborhoods would be included to illustrate the diversity of communities beyond the campus. Creating different “entry points,” or levels of reading, would help to engage a range of students; elements like “Top 10 Things to Do While at Georgetown,” and photos with captions describing details of a typical 24 hours at school. The type would be bold; the colors bright; the format would feel big (regardless of the actual size of the final piece). The time capsule would be delivered to students in a box; something bulkier and more solid than the standard envelope the viewbooks were mailed in. Two sizes were examined: one, more intimate in scale at 6” x 9” but deep in breadth at over 150 pages; and the second, bigger than life at 22” x 20” flat with (almost) full-bleed images. The overall size of the larger of the two directions allowed us to propose that additional informational materials be included in the final package.

STEP OUTCOME
OUTCOME
About 10 days of pencil sketch exploration and design team critiques produced multiple directions to investigate on the computer. At the end of step 6, two full-size black and white comprehensives and three full-size prototypes were fabricated and presented to the client team. The final decision: the larger format would accomplish the objectives.
