PROJECT GOAL
The Olympic Games not only attract the world's greatest athletes, they also attract some of the world's greatest designers. The graphic imagery that colors the celebration of each Olympiad blends the character of the host city with the visual traditions of Olympic design. In San Francisco's quest to become the U.S. Candidate City for the 2012 Olympic Games, the Bay Area Sports Organizing Committee (BASOC) invited twelve nationally prominent designers, to create posters that express the Bid's theme -The Bridge to the Future.

PROJECT BACKGROUND
George Hirthler of Helikon Media was retained as a consultant to BASOC. He conceived the theme The Bridge to the Future and the poster series program.

When a city is awarded the Olympic Games, it is typical for the Olympic Organizing Committee to sponsor a poster design series or competition. Only once in history has a bid city undertaken such an artistic endeavor, that was Stockholm in 2004. San Francisco was the first Bid City in the United States to undertake such an artistic endeavor.

Mr. Tharp's role as "Design Umpire" was to design the theme logotype (incorporating Primo Angeli's tri-flame logo) and to implement the poster program.
